For those of you who don't know, I'm in the process of getting a new kitchen. At this point, it's mostly complete. The cabinets are in, the electrical is mostly done, and the plumber only has to hook up the sink and the dishwasher. Tomorrow the granite guy will be coming to make a template for my counter tops (read: another 7-10 days without counters, a cook top or my sink. Do you want to know how useful a kitchen is without a sink or counters? It's about as useful as a desktop computer in a house without electricity! But I digress...)
The cabinets are installed and it's time to fill them. My kitchen stuff currently resides in my living room, guest room, bedroom, bathroom, the landing of my stairs, and my basement. Actually, I think the hedgehog room is the only room that is completely kitchen free (and that's only because I am subject to USDA surprise inspections and they would probably frown at me having pots, pans, and random food stuff in the hedgie bins). You really have no idea how much kitchen stuff you've accumulated until you have to temporarily re-home it (while keeping all other rooms of your house useable).Currently I'm lining the drawers and shelves. I've chosen a non-skid rubber-type liner that looks similar to a non-skid carpet pad. I based the choice purely on the fact that I hate working with contact paper. I may end up having to use flat thumb tacks to keep it down, but that's still better then getting contact paper stuck to your arm hairs!
So I'm lining the lining away and I start to wonder to myself 'Why exactly do we line shelves and drawers?' Is it because we don't want the bottoms to get scratches? Because I would think that you would wait until they got scratched and then line them to hide the scratches. And who's looking at the bottom of my drawers anyway? I expect random hedgehog inspections, but the day someone comes to inspect my cabinet bottoms is the day I retire and move to the top of MT. St. Helen's!
Do we line them so things won't slide around? If that's the case, I understand lining the drawers, but why line shelves? Things should not slide off shelves! I paid a nice sum of money to my cabinet installer and if I find out my shelves are angled I'm gonna be ticked! And if it is to stop sliding, then explain to me why a lot of people use contact paper? That's certainly not going to halt a herd of dishes headed for the floor!
I just don't get it. All I know is that when I moved into my last house and my parents came to visit, one of the first things my mom did was find stuff to line the shelves (I think we used contact paper) . So if mom says that shelves need to be lined, then dang it the shelves will get lined. After all, mom wouldn't steer me wrong........would she?
Ok, back to putting soup on shelves........ |

We have one albino male, born on 1/29/08, that will be ready to go to a new home in a few weeks. This is our first albino born here since last fall. If you are interested him, please fill out our questionnaire . He's $180 and he should be ready for his new home in mid to late March. He's got 2 siblings who are both chocolate chip, Mom is Chocolate Chip, and dad is Apricot. He is a sweet little boy who is just starting to develop his personality. We've had some inquiries for albinos over the past several months, but this is our first albino baby in awhile. We don't get very many albinos here and we don't breed for them, so if you are looking for a sweet albino boy, please notify us. If you haven't filled out our questionnaire, be sure to do so. We do not adopt out babies to anyone who isn't willing to take the time and fill out the questionnaire . |

We will be hosting a hedgehog open house on Sat August 23rd from 10am to 3pm. This event is for people who are interested in learning more about hedgehogs before they decide to purchase one. Although we plan have hedgehogs ready to go, we will not be selling then during the open house; it is strictly a learning time. If you already know you want a hedgehog, you can make an appointment for another weekday or weekend. Please RSVP if you plan to attend so we know who to expect. If there is a lot of interest, we may be able to extend our hours or add more open house days. |

The recent increases in gas prices are affecting up all. Not only is it expensive to get from point A to point B, but the prices on all of our necessities have increased as well. It's understandable, someone has to pay for the gas needed to fill the large trucks that deliver all the goods to the stores. Frankly I'd rather it not be me, but I do understand.
What I don't understand is how some of our chain stores have calculated their price increases. I was at a large craft store last week (*cough*ACMOORE*cough) purchasing small funnels for a hedgehog shipping cage I was helping make. The funnels were marked at 39 cents each. Even though I thought that was a little much for a funnel, I needed them for the cage so I went ahead and took them to the register. Well, the darn things rang up at 59 cents each! Needless to say, I was a bit miffed. I told the cashier that the funnels were 39 cents, and she informed me that prices had just gone up. I informed her that the funnels were still marked 39 cents. So we walked back to the funnels, they were 39 cents, and she rang my already over-priced funnels up at 39 cents. *grumble*
I get that prices are going up to pay for the trucks, really I do get it. I can't even begrudge it too much (well, I can, but it won't do any of us any good). But adding an extra 20 cents to a 39 cent product? Really A C More? Really? That's a bit greedy by any standard.... or will these new, more expensive funnels be spun from pure gold? Because then I get the price increase. But your current little plastic funnels are both light weight and ity bitty. You can fit a bazillion of them in a 2' X 2' box and it would still barely weigh a pound. They don't take up that much space on the truck. A 5 cent increase on each funnel will more then cover it. But 20 cents? DANG! Can you say "price gouging"? Hey, I knew you could!
That's just something I wanted to get off my chest and not the real reason for this post. The real reason I am posting this is so that everyone understands that my costs are going up too. Bedding has gone up $1/ bale (I use pine shavings), all my foods have gone up between $2 and $5/ bag, and postage (for sending food) has increased yet again. I am doing everything I can to absorb the cost and not raise my prices. I am going to have to raise the cost of shipping food, because I just can't do it and lose money. All other prices are going to stay the same for as long as I can manage. I can't predict what the economy will do and how long I can hold out on my current prices. My suggestion is to get in while the getting is still good.
I do have one request. I need everyone to stop trying to guilt me over how much it costs to get here and pick up a hedgehog. I know. I am aware of the current price of gas,. Mostly because I'm driving to the next town 2-3 times per week to get food and bedding. I've had a talk with the hedgehogs and I've asked them to stop eating and soiling their cage. They aren't obliging me, and when I checked on them this morning their food was replaced with some rather large stinky poop (ask me about the $700 air purifier I use in the hedgehog room... go ahead). Apparently I have to keep feeding and changing them. And I'm not complaining about it.
I wouldn't be breeding hedgehogs if I didn't love doing it. It's just that it's an expensive and sometimes thankless job. So the guilt trips have to stop. Because the next person who tries to guilt me over prices or the cost of their gas to get here is going to listen to my hour long gripe about my costs and the hours I work to get the hedgehogs that we all love. Then I'm going to show up at their job and ask then if they would be willing to take a pay cut. Kelly |

Those of you who currently own hedgehogs in VT do not need to worry. Even though the law has just been changed to make them currently illegal, they will either be returned to the legal list soon or permits will be issued to those who apply. There will be no 'search and destroy' mission to seek out you and your hedgehog. At this time, tenrecs are not on the 'accepted species list', so we will be unable to sell them to VT residents. Today was cleaning day, and all the hedgehogs needed their cages to be cleaned before the festivities of the days ahead. We have lots of moms and with all of them doing their motherly 'duties', the hedgehog room can get really funky really quickly!
Cleaning day is also a good day to look over all the moms and babies and make sure everyone is getting their needs met. I have to say that I am very proud of the excellent job our moms are doing with their litters and the high caliber of babies they are producing. Looking over all my litters (and seeing them back to back) gave me a real appreciation for how far I have come as a breeder and the high quality of both the hedgehogs that are being born here and the hedgehogs I have gotten from my fellow breeders.
The colors of our upcoming litters are nothing short of amazing! We have some serious dark Algerian gray and possibly some that may be dark enough to be considered Algerian black even after their primary quilling is complete. We also have some stunning bright cotty colors that are just spectacular, and uber-pintos in every color from Dark Gray to bright orange.
This breeding season is our best yet, and we know that things can only get better from here. This year has been such a busy and exciting year for me and the hedgehogs, and we have had a wonderful time meeting everyone and helping you get your new pets.
We want to thank everyone out there who reads this blog because it is you who have made us everything that we have become. We thank you for your kind words, email, and pictures. We love getting your emails and visits and we hope you will all keep in touch for the years to come!

We regret to inform those of you in VT that, as of a state meeting and vote that occured today, hedgehogs have been returned to the illegal species list. We do not have any more information at this time, and we will be sure to update you as information gets passed to us. We do not know what will happen with the hedgehogs currently residing in VT, and if special permits will be required and or allowed. Anyoine needing to relinquish their hedgehog can contact us as we are always glad to take in any hedgehog for any reason. A huge "Thank You" goes out to our network of reliable owners for keeping us abreast of the VT laws and the hedgehogs posted on craigslist and other sites. We certanily couldn't do all this without your help and we appriciate the extra effort you go to for the benefit of all hedgehogs. Kelly |

The baby I've been hand feeding, every 2-3 hours for the past several days, died this morning. She wasn't looking so good at her 6:30am feeding, and by 9am she was dead. It's very sad and I feel like I've wasted the past several days, but I felt that I had to give it my best shot. So now I'm absolutely beat, my house is a mess, and my friends have forgotten what I look and sound like. Email and questionnaires are backed up and people want pictures of their babies. I just want to take a nap. The feedings have put my body on a very odd cycle of sleeping whenever I can get to the bed. Here is a pic in memory of the little one:
